Youth in Focus

In the City of Skopje, youth participation in local decision-making processes remains critically low. Young people often lack access to relevant information, do not understand existing mechanisms for participation (such as youth councils or consultative bodies), and rarely feel that their voice is heard or valued by local authorities. Additionally, many municipalities within Skopje lack functional youth structures or inclusive approaches, leaving young people disengaged from decisions that directly impact their daily lives.

This initiative aims to address these challenges through a structured process of research and dialogue. Surveys, interviews, and focus groups with young people, youth organizations, and municipal officials will be conducted to identify the main barriers, needs, and expectations surrounding youth participation in local governance. Special attention will be given to marginalized youth and those from underserved communities.

Based on the findings, the initiative will develop recommendations and strategic proposals to strengthen youth mechanisms (e.g., youth councils, youth centers), increase transparency, and create more accessible and motivating participation pathways. Awareness-raising activities will also help boost civic motivation.

Expected results include actionable plans for improving youth inclusion, increased cooperation between youth and institutions, and a foundation for long-term policies that promote active, informed, and inclusive participation of young people in shaping their local communities.
