Improper waste management is a pressing issue in the rural areas of the Municipality of Demir Hisar, where the lack of infrastructure leads to waste being dumped in unauthorized sites such as riverbanks, fields, and roadsides. This affects local residents—families, farmers, and children—as well as tourists, harming public health, biodiversity, and the natural environment.
The problem arises from limited access to waste containers, under-resourced municipal services, and insufficient environmental education. To date, responses have been isolated and reactive, without comprehensive data or community engagement.
This initiative aims to fill that gap by mapping the issue, raising public awareness, mobilizing local action, and supporting the development of sustainable, coordinated waste management policies.
