Kumanovo Without Floods

Although Kumanovo is the largest municipality in North Macedonia by population, it suffers from severely outdated and insufficient stormwater infrastructure. Only around 20% of the urban area is currently covered by a functioning stormwater drainage system. This results in frequent and severe surface flooding during heavy rainfall, particularly in low-lying neighborhoods and key urban arteries such as “October Revolution” Boulevard. The situation leads to traffic disruptions, damaged property, erosion of public infrastructure, and increased public health risks due to standing water.

This initiative seeks to address the issue through a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach. It will begin by mapping critical flood-prone areas using on-the-ground observation and drone footage to visually document the most affected zones. Consultations will be held with municipal authorities and public utility companies, while a professional civil engineer will be engaged to provide technical assessments and propose feasible solutions for expanding and upgrading the drainage system.

The initiative will also include a financial assessment for implementation costs and a public awareness campaign to mobilize citizen support. Expected results include a professionally prepared report with clear recommendations, visual simulations to support advocacy efforts, and stronger public pressure for institutional action toward resolving Kumanovo’s long-standing drainage problems.
