Light up the game: safe and accessible sports areas and playgrounds in the municipality of Centar

In the Municipality of Centar, numerous sports fields, schoolyards, and playgrounds lack proper lighting, and some are completely unlit. As a result, these spaces are underused during evening hours, particularly in autumn and winter. The lack of lighting not only discourages physical activity but also contributes to a sense of insecurity, especially among children, youth, and women. This limits the social and recreational potential of public spaces that should serve as safe and vibrant community hubs.

The initiative “Light Up the Game” aims to identify and document the current state of public sports and recreational areas through detailed mapping, field visits, and interviews with local users and institutions. Special focus will be placed on youth and athletes, whose experiences will shape the design of feasible lighting improvement proposals.

The initiative will also include a creative awareness campaign—a short video, social media content, and a public event—to mobilize public interest and generate institutional attention. All findings and proposals will be summarized in a financial and technical overview to be presented to the political party and local authorities.

The expected result is improved public awareness, stronger civic demand for better infrastructure, and a concrete advocacy tool that encourages local government action to make public sports spaces safer, more accessible, and inclusive.
